From the Links to the Learning Garden

Just a short drive or cycle from Carnoustie Golf Links lies a gem that is the village of East Haven.

Back in June, East Haven Together were one of 15 recipients of the latest Community Benefit Grants from Carnoustie Golf Links Management Committee and the grant has helped the residents to transform the village’s community gardens into a learning garden.

The move is to raise awareness about biodiversity and engage people of all ages with nature.

A grant from CGLMC funded interpretation boards that have been filled with unusual facts about animals, birds and pollinators which have been hidden in various areas of the gardens.

East Haven community gardens were created in 2014 and designed by award-winning garden designer Karen Laing following a visit to the fishing village by BBC TV’s Beechgrove Garden.

She produced a design to bring the seafaring history of the village into the garden by way of a series of wave beds, walls and specially chosen plants.

The funding from CGLMC also enabled residents to label the beautiful coastal plants which have now matured – making the gardens an even more popular place to visit.

Wendy Murray from East Haven Together explained that visitors are always asking for the names of plants so the provision of labels will improve the experience of visitors to the gardens.

The learning garden is proving very popular with children and families.

So next time you’re in Carnoustie for a round of golf, why not take in the sights at East Haven too.
