Martin Roy, Caddie Master

Martin Roy, our Caddiemaster, was awarded the 2008 and 2011 Caddiemaster of the Year from Golf Tourism Scotland. He had previously picked up similar awards from SIGTOA from 1999 – 2004 and then again in 2006.

SIGTOA – is responsible for bringing large numbers of overseas visitors to Scotland helping generate employment in our tourist industry, this contributes enormously to our local economy with the visitors utilising the caddie programme to the full, Martin maintains a very professional Caddie discipline. The very high standard of caddie at Carnoustie has also been aknowledged by the Professional Caddie Association of America who inducted Martin into their Hall of Fame at a ceremony at the World Golf Village in St Augustine, Florida.

Martin was the first non American Caddie Master to be inducted, the ceremony which was televised in the United States acknowledged Martin’s efforts and skills in raising and maintaining such a high quality of Caddie. Martin joined two previously inducted Scots in the Hall of Fame, the late Tip Anderson (Arnold Palmer’s Caddie) and Willie Aitcheson (Lee Trevino’s Caddie). You will also see Martin as a caddie in The Golf Channel’s hit series Big Break IV USA v Europe.

Martin predominantly sources the workforce from our current membership, ninety to ninety-five per cent of the current Caddies are members who regularly play here on the Links, the experience and knowledge these Caddies bring with them is regarded as invaluable by the visiting golfers who employ them.

Several of the Caddies have over fifty years experience of playing golf on the Links, others are still in full-time education, High School, College or University, earning an income during the summer recess. We also have quite a number of career caddies, several of whom now work in America during the winter, the ages of the Caddies vary between seventeen and seventy five, their handicaps from plus three to twenty four, just like the golfers who come to play on our Links, their golfing abilities cross the spectrum.
