Craws Nest Tassie 2022 – PRACTICE ROUND UPDATE – Issued: Monday 6th December

As you may be aware, we’ve encountered issues with our tournament provider GolfBox and so have currently suspended entries to The Craws Nest Tassie Practice Rounds.

Please see the following statement issued to us from GolfBox:

“The reason players were not able to sign up for the practice round, is that the GB&I (not Scotland) countries changed the way GolfBox is allowed to access their CDH data. This now requires API credentials for each license needing to access CDH information and not the general GolfBox API that we used to be able to use.

Unfortunately, this change was implemented on very short notice without Carnoustie Golf Links being able to apply for the API information for each country and this meant that England, Ireland, and Welsh players, were not able to sign up.

We apologize for the inconvenience and we are working on getting API information for Carnoustie Golf Links, so they can keep using the service of having the GB&I players sign up for their tournaments in the future.”

Therefore, in the spirit of fairness, we will be clearing the existing draw and re-running the entry process for the Craws Nest Tassie Practice Rounds and will update you in due course with a new date and time of entry.

We tried very hard to make this work this morning under very challenging circumstances, however, we’ve not managed to give everyone the fair chance that they would expect from this tournament, so have decided to cancel the existing practice rounds and re-run the practice round bookings.

We will contact you directly via email in due course and keep our website updated to advise of the new date and time for the draw. We will only do this when GolfBox have communicated that all issues have been resolved.

This year, we worked extremely hard to ensure that we had smooth Craws Nest Tassie entry process, however, we’ve been hit with a number of unfortunate circumstances outside of our control which has in turn been passed on to you, the entrants. We can only apologise for this inconvenience. We want to make sure that this tournament is as fair and open as possible, and that’s why we’ve come to this decision.

We very much appreciate everyone’s understanding during this process and hope you have a wonderful rest of your day.

Kindest regards,
The Golf Development Team at Carnoustie

In 2021 The Craw’s Nest Tassie will not take place but will return to the Carnoustie Golf Links tournament calendar in 2022. The ‘Tassie’ will not be played in 2021 due to the Seagreen offshore wind-farm works that are currently on-going and causing disruption to the layout of The Carnoustie Buddon Course.

2019 Tassie News

Jack Merry from Birstall wins first Tassie

Jack Merry won the 2019 Craw’s Nest Tassie for the first time as he defeated Matthew Sayers (Denton) in the final by 3&2.

Throughout the week Merry showed his strength in strokeplay competition as well as matchplay, becoming the No.1 seed in the 36-hole qualifying with rounds of 70(+2) and 73(+3) over the Buddon and Championship Courses respectively. The 143 total saw him head into the Matchplay stages as the favourite.

In the last 64 Merry, perhaps surprisingly, had his toughest match as Fredrick Blom took him down the last before he prevailed with a 2-hole victory.

In the last 32 and last 16 matches Merry’s strong play saw him overcome the challenges of Danny Adkins and Sam Callaghan before taking on Robert Sluming (West Lancs) in the Friday afternoon quarter final. Merry, despite playing his 6th competitive round in 5 days, maintained his form to come out on top by a 4&3 margin.

On a blustery Saturday morning, Merry overcame Pitreavie’s Alistair Hunter by 3&2 in a tense semi-final to secure his place in the afternoon final.

Gary Hubble from Cosby wins the Maulesbank Trophy

In a closely fought final match, Garry Hubble won the 2019 Maulesbank Trophy after securing a 2-hole victory against Dominic Thorp (Filton).

On a very tough and windy afternoon, both players had their moments, but it was Hubble who held his nerve down the last to take the title after Thorp (like many great players before him) found the depths of the Barry Burn.

Hubble showed good form throughout the week, coming through qualifying with an under par (nett) score of 66 on the Buddon to finish on 148 (+10).

In the early matchplay stages, Hubble played some excellent golf which included a miraculous 10&8 victory in round one. The matches got a little tougher as the tournament went on and his toughest match came in the Semi-Final as Andrew Hurst (Denton) took him to the 21st hole.

2018 Tassie News

Local golfer Mann wins third Tassie title

Local golfer Scott Mann won the Craw’s Nest Tassie for a record-equalling third time, adding to his back-to-back success in 2004 and 2005. After six days and eight rounds of golf over the Championship and Buddon Links Courses, Mann enjoyed a convincing 7&5 victory over Steve Sansome of Birstall GC to lift the Tassie trophy.

An opening round of 77 on the Buddon Links Course, followed by 80 on a blustery day over the Championship Course saw Mann comfortably into the Tassie matchplay, six shots below the qualifying total of 163 while Sansome came through the qualifying rounds with an impressive total of 150.

Mann opened up his matchplay campaign beating Damian Scholes of Celtic Manor 3&1 while Sansome was a 5&4 winner against Steven Phillip. In the 2nd Round, Mann needed an extra hole to overcome Addington Palace’s Daniel Johnson, while Sansome enjoyed another solid win, beating Richard Buck 6&4.

Mann recorded a 5&4 win against Steve Adkins of Stock Brook Manor in the 3rd Round and Sansome beat current Carnoustie Links Champion Dan Lawrence 3&1. Sansome faced his toughest test of the competition so far in the quarter-finals, needing no fewer than eight extra holes before overcoming Daniel Adkins of Stock Brook Manor while Mann defeated Mike Seenan 3&2 in the same round.

In the semi-finals, Mann was in an all-Carnoustie tie as he faced two-time Tassie winner Andy Fyfe and needed three extra holes to beat him. In the other semi-final, Sansome narrowly beat Maurits Oosterhof 2&1.

In the final, Mann wasted no time in taking the advantage, going 3up thru the first five holes. He kept his momentum up and the match came to it’s conclusion after the 13th with Mann beating Sansome 7&5.

Smith wins to make it back-to-back Maulesbank Trophy victories from The Shire

The 2018 Maulesbank Trophy winner was crowned on Saturday as Pat Smith of The Shire beat Steve Connors of Finchley Golf Club 2&1 on the Championship Course.

Both men were in fine form throughout the tournament – Smith missed out on the cut for the Craw’s Nest Tassie by just two shots.

Smith got his matchplay campaign off to a flyer with a 6&5 win against Anders Dahl of Haninge Strand in the opening round while Connos managed to better that results in his 1st Round match as he beat Javaid Sabrine of Deane GC 7&6. In the 2nd Round, Smith continued where he left off as he defeated top seed Dominic Thorp 4&3 and it was a similar story for Connors who beat Colin Ralph 5&3.

In the 3rd Round, Connors had his closest match yet as he narrowly won against Jeff Roberts 1UP while Smith maintained his form with a 4&2 victory over Breightmet GC’s Paul Aldred. Connors only required 13 holes to overcome David Dalby 6&5 in the quarter-finals, meanwhile Smith was made to work for his place in the semi-finals, grinding out a 2&1 victory over Greg Fee.

In the semi-finals Smith overcame Chris McCormack of Blackley Golf Club 6&5 while Connors won 2&1 against Robbie Yule of Irvine Golf Club.

Given the impressive performances of both players over the course of the week, it was fitting that the final was a tightly contested affair with Smith edging Connors 2&1.

2019 Tournament Information

This year’s tournament will take place from Monday 9th September to Saturday 14th September 2019. The practice rounds are on Sunday 8th September.

If you do not receive an email then please check your SPAM folder.

The morning after ie 11th we will check for any erroneous entries and delete them. Should you have received a waiting list email do not panic as the list will move once the entries have been fine tuned and we will contact you if we can move you into the tournament! The successful entries will receive a link to make payment which can take place from midday on 11th January. At that point a request for a practice round tee time can be made for you plus up to 3 others who must have paid their entry fee. Full payment for the tournament must take place by 31st January after which the entry will be removed and the place offered to the next person on the waiting list.

There can be availability for 2 practice rounds but any such requests will not be considered until mid February to allow us to give the full field an opportunity to get a first practice round.

2016-19 Tassie News

It has been decided that the Craws Nest Tassie courses for 2016-2019 inclusive will be the Championship Course and the Buddon Links. After that a review will take place.

Following feedback from players some changes will take place with regard to the Maulesbank Matchplay and the rounds from the final 16 onwards will now take place on the Championship Course ie from Friday. This will mean the following bullet points

  • Maulesbank matchplay round of 64 and round of 32 will take place on the Buddon Links on the Wednesday and Thursday as normal
  • Maulesbank matchplay round of 16 and round of 8 will now take place on the Friday on the Championship Course
  • Semi Finals and Final will take place on the Championship Course
  • No changes to the Tassie matchplay rounds

What will this mean to other players?

  • As happens now those losing in the 1st matchplay rounds will default to the opposite course for the Thursday consolation
  • Those losing in the 2nd round of the Maulesbank will be the only non matchplay players who will receive a tee time on the Championship Course on the Friday. This means only the Buddon will have a ballot for tee times
  • We will be able to open the Buddon Links early on the Friday to assist players who wish to play a final round and then begin their travels. I would anticipate the 1st tee time that day being at approximately 7am in comparison to 9am in recent years

If you have any questions or the above is not clear simply email [email protected]

Tassie and Maulesbank Winners

It has been decided that the winners of both trophies will be given automatic entry into the following years tournament. This will apply to the holders and the 4 years prior to that providing the players still meet the entry criteria. All reasonable efforts will be made to contact these players before entry opens.

Consolation Events and Maulesbank Trophy

The pre-drawn consolation rounds (Wednesday and Thursday) process has worked well and has proven popular.  It provided every player with a fair share of playing both courses. It is drawn by Club which means that those travelling from the same club who do not qualify will play with or close to one another on the Wednesday and Thursday. The Consolation events are Stableford events and from 2014 no CSSs will be calculated as it has proven difficult to get players to register.

The Consolation events are drawn alphabetically in Club order. For those who perhaps wish to play together but are from different Clubs it may be worth listing yourselves under the same golf club after playing in the qualifying rounds, not the initial entry process for the Tassie.

If extra holes are required on either the Tassie or Maulesbank match-play events then it is done on a hole by hole basis and if strokes apply in the Maulesbank then they should be accounted for as normal.

As an ongoing exercise we are continually looking to improve everything we can in the Tassie and we always value the feedback from you.
